April 2002 Newsletter for Members Only

The 2002 AGM was attended by 21 members. The meeting commenced at 20.30 and ended at 21.30. The past year was reviews and a new committee elected. Outline plans for the coming months were presented.

ANNUAL STATEMENT FROM THE CHAIRMAN 23rd March 2002

The year 2001 to 2002 has proved an eventful one. Due to generally better weather conditions, the summer of 2001 saw many opportunities for diving, which had been denied us in 2000. The two RIBs performed well. We now have an Oxygen in each boat.

The Hard Boat bookings did have their problems, but problems are always an opportunity to get things right next time, and we believe we have a system in place for the 2002 season which will overcome those problems.

Several Members took an interest in Nautical Archaeology and are progressing through the qualification system of the Nautical Archaeology Society in Portsmouth. One of the spin-offs from this is that Club Members may join in research on new wrecks, assisting the Archaeologists. This is known as "Diving with a Purpose" which adds interest to our weekend pursuits.

On the Social scene we enjoyed taking part in the Wroughton Carnival. We spent a day firing paintballs at each other. We ran our 2nd London Coach Trip, and held a BBQ with Clay Pigeon Shooting at Hackpen farm, which helped release the pent up emotions of some members, while a Wall-climbing session tested many others. We ended the year on a high note last Thursday at the Skittles Alley in the White Hart in Wroughton. We have more to come over the next few months. (See below)

We experienced some difficulties with Lime Kiln but these appear to have been resolved, and indeed the room in which we meet tonight will soon be redecorated and equipped by Club members efforts and a minimal cost input from Club Funds, to offer a more pleasing atmosphere for Club Nights. We are also looking at possibly holding other functions within this room.

This AGM marks the end of the 4th Year and start of the 5th year of the SDC. The new Committee will inherit a Club that is now stable and established. A club that is set for growth and ready to seize opportunities as they present themselves. The main task continues to be the recruitment of new members. Those of us standing down from the Committee will remain on call to the new committee to ensure a smooth transition. I would like to thank the outgoing committee for their efforts over the last 12 months…
