DIVE PEMBROKESHIRE.... by Sue Meakin

The countryside above the water is superb, the exploring below is equally as good. I booked for a 3 day mid week break, unfortunately only dived for 2 days as the weather broke on the 3rd, with gales and a heavy swell. It did not take anything away from the pleasure I had on the 2 days successful diving. The 3 wrecks we surveyed were- the Dakotian and the Behar which were casualties of the 2nd. World War, and the Loch Shiel, locally known as Whisky Galore, no prizes for guessing what the cargo was when the Captain lost his way and landed on the rocks in 1894. There are still sizeable portions of these wrecks to swim around. The visibility was not as good as it could have been due to the awful weather they had suffered a couple of days prior to my visit. The 4th dive was a reef, there was a little current present which helped with the vis. This was a very pretty reef, with a lot of fish life. All this was within a 5-10minute RIB ride from the harbour. There are many more wrecks in this immediate vicinity, and of course there is Skomer Island with its natural beauty, this will be the itinerary for my next 3 day break. |
The Dive Lodge is run by Jan and Len Bateman, and is a very similar arrangement to Sue and Dave, in Cornwall. They can accommodate 16 visitors, most being billeted in a dormitory. Breakfasts are wholesome, and we were all given a lunch box which is included in the price. £150. 3 days bed and breakfast, 2 dives a day.
I felt it represented good value for money and it gets my vote for a club long week-end next year may be!!!!!! |
